Salvatore Maroni's crime family has deep roots in Gotham's underworld. In Pre-Crisis/Earth-Two continuity, Maroni first appeared as 'Boss Moroni' in Detective Comics #66 (August 1942), where he was tried for murdering a man named Bookie Benson. During the trial, Harvey Kent (later known as Harvey Dent) served as prosecutor and called Batman as a witness. When Maroni accused Batman of lying, Kent revealed that Maroni's lucky two-headed silver dollar had been found at the crime scene with his fingerprints. Enraged, Maroni threw acid into Kent's face, disfiguring him and triggering his transformation into Two-Face. In Bronze Age retellings, his name was changed to 'Morelli,' but the core event remained the same. Prior to Crisis on Infinite Earths, Maroni survived an assassination attempt by Two-Face in DC Superstars #14, though he was left paralyzed. He later underwent plastic surgery and assumed the identity of Anton Karoselle to evade detection, eventually exacting revenge on Two-Face by killing his former wife Gilda's new husband, Dave Stevens, which led to his own death at Two-Face's hands.

When Holiday, a serial killer targeting mobsters on holidays, begins eliminating key figures, both Maroni and Falcone suspect each other. After his father is killed by Holiday, Maroni cuts a deal with Harvey Dent to expose Falcone in exchange for leniency. However, Sofia Falcone (Maroni's secret lover) visits him in jail and falsely claims that Dent, not Falcone, is responsible for the killings and his father's death. During the trial, corrupt assistant Vernon Fields provides Maroni with 'stomach medicine' disguised as acid, which he throws into Dent's face. Maroni survives a gunshot wound from a bailiff but is later killed by Holiday, who is revealed to be Alberto Falcone seeking independence from his family. In Batman and the Monster Men, Maroni lends money to Norman Madison and Professor Hugo Strange for genetic experiments. When Strange refuses to repay the loan, he robs one of Maroni's gambling dens. Maroni sends enforcers to intimidate him, but Strange retaliates by sending a creature to kill Maroni, only for Batman to intervene.
