Carmine Falcone's rise to power began decades before Bruce Wayne donned the cowl. In a flashback from *The Long Halloween*, gangster Vincent Falcone brought his wounded son Carmine to Thomas Wayne for surgery after he was shot by rival Luigi Maroni, fearing a public hospital would not keep him alive. Years later, at Thomas and Martha Wayne's funeral, an adult Carmine told young Bruce that he could always ask a favor of the family. By *Batman: Year One*, Falcone's penthouse was designed in a Roman architectural style, mirroring his self-image as the city's emperor. His influence extended deep into Gotham's institutions; Commissioner Gillian B. Loeb desperately tried to stop Batman but found himself outmatched. When Batman rescued Catwoman from Falcone's henchmen, she permanently scarred the mobster with her metal claws, marking a turning point in his dominance.

In Their Own Story

During *The Long Halloween*, the weakened Falcone family faced relentless attacks from the serial killer Holiday, who murdered at least one family member each month on a holiday. In retaliation for Batman and Harvey Dent burning his hoard of stolen cash, Falcone hired Mad Hatter, Poison Ivy, Riddler, and Scarecrow to become part of Batman's rogues gallery. Convinced Dent was the killer, Falcone persuaded his former rival Sal Maroni to kill Dent during a court trial by providing him with acid. The acid disfigured Dent's left side, creating Two-Face. In a final twist, Two-Face killed Falcone after a coin flip landed on the scarred side. Later, Falcone's son Alberto confessed he was actually Holiday, driven by a desperate desire to be accepted into the family business.
