Roman Sionis's origin was established in his first appearance. Moments after birth, a doctor dropped him on his head, an incident his wealthy parents covered up to protect their social standing. Years later, he was attacked by a rabid raccoon at the family estate, but his parents forbade him from speaking of it. Forced to befriend Bruce Wayne, Roman grew to resent the hypocrisy of the elite. After graduating high school, he worked at Janus Cosmetics, where he fell in love with working-class model Circe. His parents forced him to break it off, leading Roman to burn down his family mansion, killing them and inheriting their fortune. He ruined Janus Cosmetics by funding a failed face-paint line that disfigured several hundred women before being rejected by Circe. When Bruce Wayne offered to bail out the company on the condition of giving up control, a humiliated Roman broke into the cemetery. A lightning bolt struck him, blasting the crypt open and hurling him head-first into stone. Taking this as an omen, he smashed his father's casket and carved an ebony mask from its fragments.

In Their Own Story

Within a month of donning the mask, Sionis assembled dozens of criminals to form the False Face Society, using the family crypt as their base. He murdered three Wayne Foundation executives and kidnapped Circe, forcing her to wear toxic Janus makeup that permanently disfigured her face. Batman eventually deduced his identity and set a trap at a masquerade ball in Wayne Manor. Sionis infiltrated the event but was forced to retreat with Robin following him. At the graveyard hideout, Black Mask escaped through a false bottom in his father's coffin and returned to his family estate to burn his old life down. While fighting Batman and Robin, he fell face-first onto burning toys as rafters collapsed, pinning his face into the fire. Although rescued from the flames, the ebony mask burned permanently onto his skin. He was sent to Arkham Asylum until Ra's al Ghul freed inmates during "The Last Arkham." Later, Sionis killed rival mobster "Dirty Dan" Doyle and joined forces with Black Spider, who was actually a double agent for Turk Ottoman. In the "War Games" storyline, Black Mask murdered Orpheus by slitting his throat, tortured the Spoiler to extract information, and assumed Orpheus's identity using face putty to hunt members of the Batman Family.

Black Mask is defined by his brutality and lack of superhuman powers, relying instead on tactical genius and vast criminal resources. He leads the False Face Society, where each member wears a distinctive mask, spreading crime rapidly throughout Gotham. His vendetta against Bruce Wayne stems from their childhood friendship and the Waynes' association with his parents. In Catwoman vol. 3 #16, he moved his drug trafficking ring into Gotham's East End, retaliating against Selina Kyle by torturing her brother-in-law to death with power tools and forcing her sister to eat pieces of his corpse. During "War Games," after killing Orpheus, he tortured the Spoiler until she supposedly died from injuries and negligence. He also infiltrated Oracle's Clocktower to expose her identity to the mob, prompting a blind rage attack by Batman that was only stopped when Oracle activated a self-destruct device. While often portrayed as a ruthless leader who controls large portions of the underworld, his history includes periods where he gave up his vendetta against Wayne to focus on total dominance until events like "No Man's Land" reshaped Gotham.
