Barbara Gordon first appeared in Detective Comics #359 (January 1967) in the story "The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!" by Fox and Infantino. Introduced as the daughter of Police Commissioner James Gordon, she donned a black bodysuit with yellow gloves, boots, utility belt, bat symbol, blue cape, and cowl while en route to a costume party. There, she thwarted a kidnapping attempt on Bruce Wayne by Killer Moth, marking the start of her crime-fighting career despite Batman's initial objections. She held a doctorate in library science and served as head of the Gotham City Public Library. In the mid-1970s, she revealed her identity to her father, served in the United States House of Representatives, and appeared in "Batgirl's Last Case" (June 1972). Julius Schwartz revived her a year later in Superman #268 (1973), establishing a friendship with Clark Kent. She became a featured partner to Dick Grayson in Batman Family (debuted 1975), known as the "Dynamite Duo: Batgirl & Robin." In Crisis on Infinite Earths, she delivered Supergirl's eulogy. Post-Crisis continuity established her as Jim Gordon's niece/adopted daughter born to Roger and Thelma Gordon.

In Their Own Story

In 1988, the graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke depicted the Joker shooting Barbara through the spinal cord in her civilian identity, resulting in paraplegia. Following this event and her retirement from the Batgirl persona in Batgirl Special #1, she was reestablished as Oracle, a technical advisor and computer expert. She made her first appearance in this new role in Suicide Squad #23 (1989). As Oracle, she became a valuable asset providing intelligence and computer hacking services to assist other superheroes, eventually becoming the featured lead of the Birds of Prey series. In 2011, as part of DC Comics' The New 52 relaunch, Barbara recovered from her paralysis following a surgical procedure and returned as Batgirl. She has since featured in the eponymous Batgirl monthly title as well as Birds of Prey and other Batman books. Following the events of Joker War, she returned to her Oracle role while recovering from an injury, continuing to operate as both Batgirl and Oracle after the 2021 Infinite Frontier event.
